PATERNO PASSES: Joe Paterno, the longtime Penn State coach who won more games than anyone in major college football but was fired amid a child sex abuse scandal that scarred his reputation for winning with integrity, died Sunday of lung cancer. He was 85. His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death: "His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled." Mount Nittany Medical Center said in a statement that Paterno died at 9:25 a.m. Sunday of "metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung." Metastatic indicates an illness that has spread from one part of the body to an unrelated area. The man known as "JoePa" won 409 games and took the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games and two national championships. More than 250 of the players he coached went on to the NFL.

PATERNO SERVICES SET: The funeral and memorial service for former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno are scheduled for the campus where he worked for more than six decades before being fired in the wake of the child sex-abuse charges against a former assistant. Members of the board of trustees that replaced the longtime coach say Paterno's family are putting the event together, but some of them will attend to pay their last respects. Anger at the board has been evident since the 85-year-old Paterno died of lung cancer Sunday night. A school spokeswoman says planning for the memorial Thursday at the Jordan Center basketball arena is being done by the athletic department with the family's assistance.

ONE WEEK UNTIL SIGNING DAY- ESPN's Tom Luginbill joins us today to discuss this year's class and how Florida State is closing fast upon Alabama. ESPN's 150 says,'Jimbo Fisher and Florida State keep moving closer and closer to the top spot in the rankings. With the recent addition of former Auburn ATH commit Ricardo Louis (Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Beach Senior), who is No. 21 in the ESPNU 150, and a big (literally) supply of talented defensive linemen, led by the nation's No. 1 player Mario Edwards (Denton, Texas/Billy Ryan), the Seminoles leapfrog Texas and move into the No. 2 spot. FSU, with 10 ESPNU 150 prospects in its 16-member class, sits just behind Alabama.' Also today, we'll update and discuss Coach Mike Leach's lawsuit versus Texas Tech.

JOE PATERNO MEMORIAL: Some 10,000 ticket holders headed to a campus memorial service on Thursday for one final goodbye to late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, concluding five days of public mourning for college football's legendary "JoePa." Massive crowds have been turning out since Paterno died on Sunday of lung cancer at age 85, with supporters choosing to remember how he built a hugely successful and profitable college football program rather than his fall from grace for failing to alert police to a child sexual abuse scandal involving an assistant. Interest in "A Memorial to Joe" at the school's basketball arena on Thursday afternoon was so intense that 10,000 free tickets were snapped up within seven minutes earlier this week. We'll give live updates today from State College, PA services for Joe Paterno.

SPORTING NEWS: Finebaum Show Fuels Passionate Following

Sports talk radio is at best healthy interaction between host and callers and selected guests. At worst, it’s an avenue for the unhealthy, unsteady and unthinkable of the world. Somewhere in the middle rests the Finebaum Show, which for years hummed along as a daily, can’t-miss southern staple in the heart of Birmingham, Ala. It was Alabama vs. Auburn, and the SEC, and Alabama vs. Auburn.
